ND sports therapy services

What is sports therapy?

Sports Therapy is a fundamental aspect of healthcare that is associated with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of an athlete or client back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. Sports Therapy is not just for those who play sport, the same assessment and treatment principals apply to non-sporting clients, many of whom find a huge benefit in using the services provided.

The principals of sport and exercise science are utilised whilst incorporating the physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant physically and mentally for training, competition and where appropriate, work.

injury assessment

At ND Sports Therapy, your story will be heard and a detailed history of your issue as well as your past and present medical history. This is to highlight any contraindications you may have and to ensure you are safe to be treated. A thorough assessment will be carried out involving movement, palpation and special tests to formulate a diagnosis.

Treatment & Therapy

Once the assessment is complete we can create an individualised rehabilitation plan to effectively achieve the functional goals we set together. Treatment & Therapy forms an integral part of my approach to treating the whole body, not just a complaint in isolation. This is fundamental to ensuring the long-term health and wellness of our clients.

Sports MAssage

Sports massage involves the manipulation of soft tissue such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. It is designed to aid in correcting issues and imbalances in soft tissue caused by trauma, and repetitive and strenuous physical activity.

We can divide sports massage into three categories:

  1. Injury care massage

  2. Event massage (pre, during and post)

  3. Training and maintenance massage

Various massage techniques, including range of motion and stretching are used to achieve specific goals when treating clients. Sports massage is not exclusively for sports people, some of the benefits include:

- Decreased muscle tone and spasm

- Increased blood and lymph circulation

- Relaxation

- Increased mobility

- Improved tissue drainage

- Removal of waste products and chemical irritants

- Stimulating muscle tone (pre sporting event)

- Provoking muscle and tendon reflexes (pre sporting event)
